Hardly any other segment places such specific demands on the catalyst as waste-to-energy plants do: fluctuating fuel compositions, varying calorific values, and changing moisture content. Thermal waste treatment is also often associated with low flue gas temperatures. Municipalities continuously monitor compliance with the strict limit values, and operators must ensure that the limits for dioxins and furans are met.

In thermal waste treatment, the fuel is never homogeneous: municipal solid waste, hazardous waste, medical waste, residual materials, refuse-derived fuel (RDF), and waste-derived biomass vary greatly in calorific value and pollutant content.

The catalyst must therefore fulfill two functions at once: it must reliably reduce nitrogen oxides even at low temperatures and safely break down highly toxic dioxins and furans.
